Ten Places You Must Visit Before You Die
November 15, 2007 5:01 am Environment 10) New York City, USANew York is one of those cities you have to visit at least once. Although the Big Apple might not seem like something you’re interested in at first, it’s something spectacular. Just think: you’ve got great shopping, great eats and great people with personality. Drop by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and check out the permanent collection. My favourite is the Costume Exhibit! Once you’re done at the MET, head down to Times Square. It’s not all about the main sights either: check out a movie, catch a show, take a walk through the park or admire the scenery. Your trip won’t be complete without a baseball game at Yankee Stadium. But hurry, they’re already building a new Yankee Stadium, set to open in 2009.While in Paris you can spend your day sipping hot coffee as you stroll alongside the Seine, or you can walk around the downtown area, taking in the local busy scene and shop in the many little boutiques. The Louvre will always be my favorite museum; it used to be a luxurious residence for the royals! Notre Dame is another of Paris’ gems; go there at night to see it light up the Seine. But let’s not forget that Eiffel Tower, which will never cease to amaze! The first thing which comes to everyone’s mind when Egypt is mentioned are the Pyramids, which are not to be missed. Hit them up old school with a camel ride. Explore Khan El-Khalili, Cairo’s fantastic bazaar: from tea, to carpets to anything imaginable, can be found among the shops. Practice your haggling skills; you’re going to need them! Catch this twilight experience from May to July. Like Paris’ Louvre, the Hermitage is not to be missed. Their permanent collection is enormous and features some of Europe’s greatest pieces of art. While you’re there, don’t forget to take in the rooms, and halls themselves; this once was the winter home for Russia’s ruling family! Check out Carnival for a great expression of Creole culture: from food to dance, you’ll find it all here the week before Lent. Make sure you enjoy the country’s calypso music and I dare you to try to limbo! With a beautiful warm climate and a great vibe, Trinidad and Tobago make the top 10!5) FijiA country of 322 islands, Fiji is one of the greatest exotic honeymoon spots in the world. But you don’t have to be a honeymooner to experience Fiji’s beaches, rainforests, coral reefs, and everything else it has to offer. Be sure to treat yourself to some locally grown fruit, as it doesn’t taste any sweeter or fresher anywhere else! Beqa Lagoon is not to be missed because the barrier reef provides fish in every colour; you can’t help but be mesmerized. Try snorkeling or Scuba diving to see the underwater sights, or visit Horseshoe Bay Beach, which has been called “one of the finest beaches in Fiji” by expert Patricia Schultz, author of 1,000 Places To See Before You Die.If you love gardens, Taveuni Island, nicknamed the Garden Island is the place to be to see how volcanic soil has invigorated the local flora and fauna.4) Morocco
Download mp3 songs
Even if you only go to Morocco to eat, you will leave a happy traveler! Due to Morocco’s long history and the influence of outside civilizations, Morocco is a lovely blend of all sorts of spices, cultures and religions. Be sure to try the couscous.
If you haven’t seen Casablanca, the Moroccan city is a must-see! While exploring one of the world’s largest artificial ports, be sure to take in the Hassan II Mosque. Half of the mosque is actually build over the sea; there’s a glass floor for whorshipers who want to pray over the ocean!
If you’re up for it, arrange a trek into the world’s largest desert, the Sahara, to experience Morocco’s best.
3) Alaska, Anchorage and Beyond!
The cold shouldn’t keep you from seeing Alaska. The beauty of the landscape is a strong draw. Mount McKinley, and the surrounding Denali National Park should be among every tourist’s must-see Alaskan sights. A two-hour drive north of Anchorage puts you among the six million acres of wildlife reserve. Just imagine all the Alaskan wonders you’ll see on the tundra.
For another Alaskan cultural experience, check out the Iditarod, a dog-sled race across the country, starting in the capital Anchorage, which takes place in early March. If you’re interested, you can bid for a spot on one of the sleds to experience the rush of the first 11 miles!
2) Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro
mp3 music download
With the nickname “The Marvelous City,” there’s little doubt why Rio de Janeiro makes the list! Clear, turquoise water, white, sandy beaches and a great tourist friendly atmosphere will never make you want to leave. Check out Ipanema Beach for great surfing and even better sunsets!
Be sure to plan your trip to coincide with Carnival to experience Rio at its best. With the world’s largest Carnival celebrations you’ll find great food, spectacular samba music and the marvelous spirit of Rio! Put some time aside to visit Corcovado, the mountain gracefully looking over the city; a 38-meter statue of Jesus overlooks the entire city and it is prominently featured, no matter where you are!
1) Tokyo, Japan
At the top of the list, we find, mega-metropolis Tokyo. With a population of about 12 million people, the “Eastern Capital” is really a city that never sleeps. You have to be an early riser to catch the action at the world’s largest wholesale fish market; activity in the market all but ceases by 11 a.m.. Be sure to catch the auction starting at 5 a.m., which is perfect for jet-lagged tourists.
Later on in the day, visit the Imperial Palace, home of the Emperor and his family, for a glimpse of lush gardens and beautiful buildings. Don’t miss Mount Fuji. Although not in Tokyo, it can be seen on a clear day! Take some extra time to visit the extraordinary sight If you’re brave, take a hike and join the few who have conquered the mountain!
Bonus: Your Home Town as an Adult
This might seem a little odd in a list of places you must visit before you die, but it’s always important to go back to your roots. Living in a city, town, or mega-metropolis is a completely different concept than exploring it as a tourist. Chances are, you’ve never played the tourist in your hometown. What is your city known for? Narrow a list down to the top five.
Visit old favourites: the city zoo, the best Thai restaurant in town or the city’s famous monuments. And be sure to see something new. If you’ve never been to that old drive-in theater downtown, it’s time to go see a movie. Explore how your hometown has changed from your youth.

Been to Morocco and hated it. It’s fine for people who like to pay other people to do things for them, who like toadies to do things for them, but if you want to be left alone to enjoy your day, then Morocco isn’t for you. Although poverty can be picturesque, I don’t think it’s fun in real life. I also don’t like being around smiling people who curse you between their teeth.
Been all over Alaska and beyond. It’s full of rednecks, bears, bogs, and mosquitoes. I did see some forms of ice and snow that I never knew existed, but mostly it was boring.

Morocco really is an amazing trip. I would actually recommend visiting Fes and Marrakesh over Casablanca. The Sahara really is a must-see!
If you start in Fes, take a bus down to the Sahara, you get to ride through the high/middle Atlas Mountains on your way to Marrakesh! (Note that these bus rides range from 9 to 14 hours though, so make sure you’ve got enough time.)

I’ve traveled all over the US and to 4 countries outside of the US. 1 of those countries was Morocco. It is without a doubt my least favorite destination I’ve ever been to. If you want culture and great food, go to Spain (preferably Madrid or Barcelona) or Italy. I’m not sure how both of these phenomenal places were left off this list but they are both way better than Morocco.
And regarding your hometown as an adult. Everyone should do this but prepare to be sad and disillusioned. It’s not the town you grew up in anymore. You can never really go back home.

I live in Anchorage and appreciate the kind words, but must point out that the capital of Alaska is Juneau. Juneau, however, is worth visiting in its own right as part of a spectacular cruise up the “Inside Passage” that runs through Southeast Alaska. I move to Anchorage from New York City in 1970 and it is the smartest thing I ever did.

[…] From the colours in Morocco, to the concrete jungle of New York, to the romantic and beautiful Paris, every single place in the world is unique. Traveling lifts the spirit and opens your eyes to explore something unbelievable which stretches past the edge of your imagination. You won’t believe what you can discover out there. Living in South Africa, which is extremely diverse (come visit!), I can drive 100km in any direction and experience something most people never ever think exist. To me that is the joy of traveling, and to help you being your traveling “career” I have got a informative list from Awcbee, “Ten Places You Must Visit Before You Die” […]

Just wanted to let you know that Anchorage is not the capital of Alaska. The capital is Juneau. And being a resident of the state I’d have to say that if you want to experience Alaska do not visit Anchorage. The best parts of Alaska are the small fishing towns and the wilderness… Denali, Valdez (my favorite), Seward, Homer, Kenai, etc. Don’t waste your time in cities that are just like the cities back home. Get out, explore, see wildlife… mountains, and glaciers.

I’ve been to 4 of those ..excluding the last one of course, I have to say that the must visit places before you die shouldn’t be limited to just 10. I’ll visit any and everywhere, I don’t mind going anywhere in the world.

uh… this list is pretty rediculous.
#1) no pictures
#2) these are all basically westernized tourist locations. If you are interested in taking a tour bus with a bunch of rich fat americans, then hop on board.
Otherwise, take a trip somewhere that actually has some culture.

Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro
1) Don’t forget New Year’s Eve - Two million people dressed in white on Copacabana beach and the party only gets STARTED with the unbelievable fireworks at midnight.
2) If you’re a soccer (futebol) fan, pass one world’s cup in your life in Rio; EVERY game stops the city in it’s tracks; it’s on every radio, every TV. Every goal scored is cheered from every window. And if for some reason Brazil doesn’t go all the way, there is an intense mourning period of a few hours, but then talk of the next game starts and the excitement continues.

Cool list. If you talk about the greater Tokyo area, which includes Yokohama, Chiba, etc. the population actually goes up to about 34 million. This sort of makes more sense than talking about the city alone, as it is really an uninterrupted urban sprawl, and the ‘city’ definition is just a regulatory boundary. Pretty cool place to live though.

Well, these are some cool cities but the ‘before you die’ bit is a bit of a hyperbole compared to the obviousness of the list. A better title would be ‘10 places to go to not be considered a closed minded douche.’
Before you die why not try places like the Kjeragbolten in Norway, trekking in Nepal Himalayas, or Petra in Jordan?

I think it’s hilarious that so many people have pointed out that the author made a mistake on Alaska. One person saying it would be enough. Any more than, and it quickly becomes annoying.
Aside from that, I would agree with some of these places–but not all. They do all seem to be big-city oriented; however, life is not just about the big city. Small cities can often times provide more meaningful experiences than large ones where everything is hustle and bustle.
Anyways, a list such as this is going to be more subjective than objective no matter what. People have different interests, tastes, and ideas of what pleasurable experiences really are.

I’ve been to Paris.. great place to visit, but definitely for the food.. the food is seriously terrible. You’ll get ripped off no matter where you go. To the French, a piece of bread is a $20 meal. Also, they’ll give you a super-thin glass of beverage containing 100mL of fluid that can be easily emptied in a single gulp and charge you $15 for it.

One place I’d recommend highly is the city of Gangtok in India. It is situated in the lower Himalayas at an altitude of 1,780 metres (5,480 feet), in southeast Sikkim. The awesome Rumtek Buddhist monastery there is a highly recommended visit, and also the amazingly beautiful Tsango lake surrounded by the Himalayan ranges! And do not forget to travel a little further to Yumthang valley aka The Valley of Flowers, which is situated at an altitude of 11800 ft, with a whole lot of hot springs sprinkled throughout the valley! The road to Yumthang from Gangtok follows the Teesta River, crossing a spectacular gorge over the Rang Rang suspension bridge. White water rafting in the Teesta River is also something that the adventurous should not miss!

I’ve been to paris on several occasions … it’s not the city of lovers as it is the city of insane prices and “wanna-be” art.
In most bars in paris you’ll pay at least €4 for a cola (20cl) and the louvre, though filled with great artwork is only as famous as it is because it houses the mona lisa which in real life looks tiny and ugly compared to the huge paintings in the room right next to it.
I’d advice to change Paris into Prague, I’ve been there once, the people there are very weird but the city is filled with incredible looking buildings, even the ones that aren’t famous look amazing. The food … depends on where you go but the tourist rush there has brought american chains into the city which is good enough for me, I rarely travel to experience the food.

We like to blame the government for everything but its the people that shape the culture of a country and you are just spewing ignorance.
I would highly recommend anyone to visit here, they would without a doubt have a wonderful time.

I will point you to where it is located
first find “3) Alaska, Anchorage and Beyond!”
Then starting in the second paragraph, the second line starts “the country, starting in the capital Anchorage”
Thanks for playing…

Oshkosh, Wisconsin for the annual fly-in. An amazing gathering of people celebrating the American can-do spirit and the joy of flight. Or, just sit and watch the runways at what becomes the world’s busiest airport.
Then go up the road to Lambeau Field in Green Bay, home of the only nonprofit professional sports team.
